That means thinking twice before:

-Financing furniture or appliances
-Opening a store credit card
-Buying a new car
-Taking out a personal loan
-Running up credit card balances
-Co-signing a loan for someone else

Even if you can afford the payment, new debt can change your debt-to-income ratio and potentially affect how much you qualify to borrow.

A Few 2026 Credit Rules Worth Knowing

-Don't close old credit cards just because you're moving. Closing an account can reduce available credit and increase your credit utilization.

-Don't make large unexplained deposits. Mortgage lenders may need to document where significant funds came from, particularly when those funds are being used for the down payment or closing costs.

If you're shopping for a mortgage, don't let credit inquiries stop you from comparing lenders. Multiple mortgage inquiries made within a 45-day period are generally treated as a single inquiry for scoring purposes.

-When you're buying a home, change your address, not your financial profile.

-Pay everything on time. Keep balances under control. Avoid unnecessary new credit. And before making a major financial move, check with your mortgage professional first.
